I read this book on a whim and over a fair few months It started out just as a means of passing time but as I read it I got and invested and interested by itNLP is psychology but it is far from the days of pigeonholing people It is very much based on modelling people who excel at particular things and in fact NLP itself is a model of three very effective therapists Virginia State Milton Erikson and Fritz Perls This means that NLP deals with how we perceive reality how we think communication goal setting and accelerated learning and that it has very practical applications such as learning sellingbusiness and psychotherapy Results are what count and instead of problems it focuses is on outcomes; the 'whys' are much less important than the desired result and this differs substantially from traditional psychology and psychotherapyI found the book very enjoyable and extremely interesting It has reduced conflict in my life because I now appreciate the importance of rapport and the importance of framing reality in a positive way I was an armchair Freudian and I now know how analysing others gets one no where; I lead by example instead of nagging from behind It has also confirmed how subjective everyone is and towards the end of the book the so called objectivity of science was tackled under the light of the psychology of perception And I especially enjoyed the chapter on hypnosis too because it often gets sensationalised by the media so I enjoyed learning how it works and what Erikson's intentions were when he used it in psychotherapy I now want to do a course in NLP

For anyone coming new to this emergent field of self improvement this book will be the perfect introduction Having said that it’s a getting a bit ‘long in the tooth’ now Nevertheless it provides a comprehensive and very readable outline of the fundamental principles that haven’t changed As is commonly the case with introductory NLP texts it opens with a brief outline of the history of the development of NLP beginning with the early association and subseuent collaboration between John Grinder and Richard Bandler and the influence that Gregory Bateson had on this process It then progresses to examining in a series of chapters the basics examples of which are; communication rapport pacing and leading representational systems predicates sub modalities anchors feedback the Meta Model nominalizations presuppositions the Milton Model metaphor reframing timelines conflict and congruence metaprograms Phobia cure the Swish pattern and modellingAs has been said before there are some what might be described as ‘dry sections’ in the book This cannot be helped; there is simply no other way to communicate the material and overall O’Connor and Seymour do a brilliant job If you don’t mind ‘touchy feely new age’ writing and I have to say usually of US origin there are other books out there that cover similar ground but for me this is good ‘old fashioned’ no nonsense information delivery that is comprehensive and entertainingI cannot recommend it highly enough

This book was recommended by Neil StraussIt is a textbook with what I felt were limited practical examplesGiven that NLP is about modelling excellence I feel the writers could have modelled some engaging authors in order to explain their subjectI am familiar with NLP and looking for a practical guide to implement it into my life rather than a very dry textbookI don't think this book would be of much use to a total beginner as I can't see someone finishing the book without any reply benefit to them except at the end when further tapes books or courses are recommendedPerhaps I am just used to personal development books that have practical applications that can be implemented immediately while reading the book This book may work for some but not me
